Message from our Chairperson

Hi! Everyone.

I am very happy to say that this year has gone beautifully! Melanie has done such a great job of coordinating events and trops and just plain being there!

The last few years have been kind of rocky for our Association, but together we have managed to put our Association on track again. I am grateful for the support all of you (Leaders) have given me in the past. I know that whomever we all elect to continue on as Association Chairperson, will do a wonderful job in the future, knowing that she has so much support.

I really have enjoyed the positions I have held within this Association (don't think I'm going to disappear!), but it really is time to have fresh blood running through our veins ! I am moving from Jeanne Circle to 435 Elderwood Drive in Martinez on the first of April. I'm not moving out of town, so I'll still have my hands in the Association next year too! Just a much quieter position... Thank you all for a wonderful reign as Chairperson!

Message from our Coordinator

What a fantastic year we are having, I can't believe it is more than half over. I really think our Association has evolved this year into a very awesome organization. I want to thank everyone for all of their hard work this year to make us so great. To all the School Organizers, Event Coordinators, and Leaders you have all done a terrific job. Just you wait till May 6th and our Funky Bucks Silent Auction. It is guaranteed to blow your socks off! We decided that it would be an evening of desserts and appetizers. Bring and share your best dessert or appetizer, copy the recipe down and we will compile them. So in other words if you don't get that Silent Auction item that you just had to have, at least your taste buds will be tantalized.

Again, a big THANKS to you all!
Melanie Wright,
the Uncoordinated Coordinator

Troop News

Junior Troop 3941 - Christ the King - As part of earning the Junior Aide badge in April, this troop put on a tea/fashion show for some very lucky Brownies. Along with setting up and decorating, they prepared delicious food, which they served. They taught some songs and also had on display samples of crafts from the past 2 years. "It was a fun way to tell Brownies about Junior Girl Scouting" said Leader Lisa Chrisman.

Brownie Troop 1331 - "Brownies making Brownies", yum, this troop made brownies for the school fiesta dessert. The principal asked if they would like to participate, the school provided the supplies and location, and the brownies supplied the girlpower. They made brownies, served the brownies at the event and cleaned up afterward. The fiesta dinner is served in conjunction with the school science fair and open house, all in one night!. "The girls, the teachers, and the parents, enjoyed the humor of Brownies (the girls scouts) making brownies (the dessert)"

Junior Troop 960 - Woodside Elementary - This troop has gone through a metamorphosis this year. Combining girls from a Woodside troop and an Ygnacio alley troop making it a combination of 4 different schools and a home schooler. These girls are very creative and worked on a Service Project this year that benefited Woodside School and Mt. Diablo Preschool, by making crafts, with the old holiday decorations donated from a florist, that the schools in turn sold. They have checked out the recycle center and seen where their recycling goes. The troop really enjoyed caroling at Mt. Diablo Hospital, they really hammed it up by acting out the Twelve Days of Christmas. Recently we attended the Thinking Day event and did an impromptu flag ceremony. They look forward to the rest of the year being spectacular in every way!!!!

Brownie Troop 218 - Sequoia Elementary - "Flip open your Girl Scout calendar...sharpen your pencils...and jot down your Girl Scout Super Troop goals!" that's just what Susan Kahn, Leader, has done as her 3rd year Brownie troop kicked off their new school year with a warm welcome to 7 more girls from another troop. Their Super Troop goals include events such as a Rededication Ceremony, First Aid training program provided by the Red Cross, and a Career & Hobby Theme Halloween Party. "This group of girls is looking forward to a fun-filled year, while learning and utilizing additional troop government responsibilities as they begin crossing the bridge into a world of Junior Girl Scouting."

Junior Troop 692 - Sequoia Elementary - "This troop made quilts for pre-mature babies! (12" x 12") The quilts were used to provide color and excitement to the babies' lives in the incubator", said leaders Laughlin Divine and Gretchen Graves. They were made in 3 meetings, with the help of Pat Ronald and Cindy Walitsch, who provided the sewing machines and general assistance. Each girl chose a different pattern and material. With the help of the leaders, they sewed the pieces together, pressed them and then turned them over to the Contra Costa Quilters guild, who in turn gave them to Alta Bates Hospital. The general consensus was that they learned to sew, work together, and develop their imagination.

Brownie Troop 2151 - Woodlands Christian School - found their picture in the Walnut Creek Journal. This troop decided to share the spirit of giving with the children in an orphanage in Bosnia. They put together shoeboxes and filled them with toys and little necessities, such as toothbrushes, shampoo, and soap. They then decorated the boxes, which were then hand delivered by someone who was going over to Bosnia. Rumor has it that the gentleman will be returning to the troop and reporting the success of their efforts.

HELP!!! Brownie Troop 1039 needs your help. If you have ideas for service projects appropriate for mostly 1st grade Brownies, please call our leader, Peggy Wallace with your ideas. THANKS! However, they are having a "blast" this year. They have written to 2 Girl Guides in Quebec, Canada, who in turn sent them some pins and badges from their program in Canada. They wrote to them in English and French. The Girl Guides report that it is very cold where they live! This Troop attended the Sweetheart ball and wish to thank the organizers of this event and they "loved it". Now they are looking forward to a Spring full of sun and fun!

Brownie Troops 1248 & 369, and Junior Troop 1068- Woodside Elementary - For Thinking day they chose to take a trip across the country and around the world. As part of an orienteering project, junior Troop 1068 plotted map routes to points of interest, such as the birthplace of Juliette Low, the homeland of Lord Baden-Powell, the four Girl Scout World Centers, and the Olympic Host countries, present and future. (Boy, I wish I could have their mileage for my mileage plus card!) As part of the days activities, the girls submitted their favorite recipes for a cook book. The Brownies from Troop 1248 provided tasty snacks, some actually from the recipe book! All three troops shared games, ideas, and the best ingredients of all, laughter and camaraderie. "All in the true spirit of Thinking Day" says Troop Leader Sue Walters.

Junior Troop 1142 - Morello Elementary - Celebrated the Girl Scouts 85th Anniversary on March 12th by mulching (not munching) the landscape at Rogers-Smith Park in Pleasant Hill and performing the flag ceremony for the PTA Founders Day celebration at their school. That was a busy and fun day. They have done two other community service projects: school clean up in September and a towel and blanket drive for Martinez Animal Shelter from December through February. (With the way the weather is going they could probably collect through May!)

Brownie Troop 1590 - Woodside Elementary - practices the art of multi-tasking. They each made two glove puppets for the Puppets, Dolls and Play Try-It. One puppet was to keep, the other was donated to the Pediatric Ward of Mt. Diablo Hospital to cheer up the patients over the holidays. They also interviewed Dr. C. Lori as the final requirement for the Careers Try-It. For another service project, this Troop has been bringing non-perishable food items to their weekly meeting and will donate them to the Contra Costa Food Bank.

Safety Fair

On October 8, 1997, three Junior Girl Scouts were busy running a Pleasant Hill Girl Scout Association event that they created. As part of earning the Junior Girl Scout Leadership Pin, Vincenta Grassano, Kathie Thornbury and Noel Chrisman from Junior Troop 3941 put on a Safety Fair for the entire Association. Other scouts from their troop helped while over 120 Juniors and 3rd year Brownies earned the Safety Sense badge.

Everyone had a great time. Of the six learning stations, the favorite was a tour of the inside of an ambulance. (Did you know that the back of one ambulance can hold TWENTY scouts?) A professional make-up artist volunteered to create "owies" on the scouts so we could practice first aid on realistic wounds - and it DID look real!

Refreshments started the event, which was completed with the awarding of a "Safety" patch to participants.

Cookie Kudos

Congratulations to Julia Simpson of Junior Troop 339 for reaching the Cookie Hall of Fame. Julia sold 1000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to friends, family and at booth sales. Besides contributing to the $625 the troop of 4 earned, as a reward for her efforts she'll be going to scout camp for a week and on a trip to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk with other top sellers. Julia and Troop 339 would be glad to share their marketing ideas developed while earning the cookie badge, with other troops. Way to go Julia!!
