Children's Junior Girl Scouts Raise Funds for Afghan Fund

Darlene Stone and Laura Curtis - Leaders
Written by the members of Jr. Girl Scout Troop 3873

This year we went to our leader's house and made reindeer necklaces. We sold them at our school's Holiday Store. After the necklaces were sold, we had about $30. The money that we earned was going to go to the President of the United States. We sent all of the money along with letter to him explaining what we did. The money was sent to go towards the president's fundraiser for Afghan children. We all had fun!

"One Warm Coat" A Success!

Troops 155, 196, 1664, 2156, 2157, 2161, 2185 and Girl Scout troops at Woodside Elementary School participated in the coat drive. A total of 560 coats have been collected and donated by Pleasant Hill Association Girl Scouts. Children and adults from all over the county benefit from this service project. Thank you on behalf of all of them, and give yourselves a pat on the back for a GOOD JOB!!

Community Service Focus

Rebecca Storm, Troop Leader
Brownie Girl Scout Troop #2045

In October, we had jumped right into the community service projects with the help of Junior Troop 3878 by working on a "Juliette Low Birthday" gift basket for a troop in need. In November, we made Christmas cards for veterans. Due to scheduling conflicts and basic holiday overload, we leaders decided that we would skip the Christmas caroling at the local assisted living center of seniors which we had done the year before. In November, when the troop went over the upcoming December calendar we leaders were pleasantly surprised when our Brownie observed that we were missing the Christmas caroling from the calendar. The girls were quick to point out that the "grandparents" would certainly be expecting us and we should be there or they would be sad. We took a vote and everyone wanted to go, so we did go to our now Annual Christmas Caroling. The girls showed us exactly what the Christmas spirit (and community service) is about...Making someone happy just because!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 8th, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are planning a day of Fairy Tale Fun as a Bronze Award Project. We will have games, songs, crafts and. The event will be at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez off Center Avenue. Call Peggy Wallace at 228-7033 if you have questions.

Locks of Love Contribution

Written by, Nora Pallotta - member of Troop 3941

Two girls from Cadette/Senior Troop 3941 have cut their hair and donated it to an organization called Locks of Love. Locks of Love uses the donated hair to make wigs for children with long-term medical hair loss. It takes 10 to 15 bundles of hair to make one wig. The donated hair must be at least ten inches long and not chemically damaged. If you would like more information, the Web site is www.locksoflove.com.

Helping Younger Troops Is Fun

Ellen Lawrence, Leader

Troop 2156, 4th grade Junior Girl Scouts from Hidden Valley Elementary, have started working on their Junior Aide badge. They have been having a blast helping Brownie Troop 2183 with their Bridging requirements and planning activities to lead meetings with first grade Brownie Troop 2402. They love helping younger girls and love repeating some favorite Try-It activities!

"Frosty Fun" at Camp Sugar Pine

Gina Paff, Leader

Brownie Troop 2183 had a great time at Camp Sugar Pine in December. We went on a family camping trip with Junior Troop 3878 and their moms. It snowed all day the Saturday we were there, which was perfect for completing the Frosty Fun badge as part of our bridging activities. We organized a snow sculpture contest, had snowball fights, looked at snowflake patterns and made snow cones out of real snow. We learned about working in patrols while we cooked, set the tables and cleaned up. Two of our moms are nurses, so we learned about hypothermia and how to stay safe in the winter weather. A couple of girls had never been to the snow before and some had never seen that much snow. It was so much fun we never wanted to come inside!

Cookie Sale Helpers for Four Years!

Barbara Jean Guiot, Leader

On February 24, our Cadette Girl Scout Troop 262 spent the day helping separate cases of Girl Scout cookies for different troops. We helped organize over 9,000 cases of Girl Scout cookies for the individual troops. We've been doing this for four years, and we're so glad that we are able to help out. We also feel honored that Pat Fliers schedules the cookie pickups around our troop schedule. It took a few hours, but at the end of the day everyone went home happy, after having picked upall of their Girl Scout cookies. I know that even though the work is tiring, we would definitely do it again!

Getting Away From It All

Janet Weiss & Meredith Davis, Leaders

In May of 2001, Troop 2185 celebrated the end of their Cadette Girl Scout years by going on a houseboat on Lake Oroville. Great memories include: teaching a member to swim; having time to just sit and talk with each other; not having an agenda; and just being able to get away from it all. They would definitely recommend this adventure to any troop that needs some well deserved R & R.

Observing Leadership In Action

Sue Walters, Leader

Cadette Girl Scout Troop 1248 took a different approach to examining leadership in action (as part of the Cadette Leadership interest project). First we attended a local elementary school PFC meeting, where the girls interviewed the President and watched the proceedings. We next took a look at city government by viewing a tape of the last Concord city council meeting (prerecorded via the public access channel). The girls were able to get a sense of what's involved in organizing and conducting a meeting by attending one and we were able to effectively critique and compare leadership techniques of both meetings by using the VCR.

Troop 2188 at Camp Butano

Written by Margaret Gorrell & Samantha Wall - members of Junior Girl Scout Troop 2188

We camped at Camp Butano on Feb 8-10. We have many fun memories such as "Rosemary's Revenge," a skit some of us did. We went on a mushroom hike and discovered an old sawmill. We found several cool things such as a rope bridge, a tetherball court, volleyball court, a stage, and a spider hammock. Plus, the food was fantastic. We also went to the beach and made a house from driftwood. It was great fun and we had a wonderful time.

Snow Tripping!

Written by Annie Shelton - member of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 1830

Cadette Girl Scout Troop 1830 went on a snow trip! We drove up to one a Girl Scout cabin and spent two nights there. We prepared our own meals (and cleaned up after ourselves) and even got a lesson in plumbing when a toilet broke down. We went snow tubing on a really steep hill. We also took a walk in an old redwood forest, while it was snowing. The snow trip was a lot of fun and every one agreed they would like to do something like that again.

TROOP #960 STRIKES SILVER!

Congratulations to Troop 960 for achieving their Girl Scout Silver Award. After a year of planning, Grace Ash, Kim Jackson, Joanna Jaworski, Allison Swick and Brittany Syrovatka have successfully completed their Silver Award. They planned and implemented a Wildlife Workshop for the Junior Girl Scouts of Woodside Elementary School. All the Junior Girl Scouts earned their Wildlife badge. Each girl was responsible for a portion of the badge and they had different activities planned for the girls. They included a play, acting lessons, bird talks, cooking and games. A special speaker from the Fish and Game department came and gave a fantastic talk on wildlife and answered all the girls' questions. She brought animal pelts, bones, snakeskins and lots of information. Everyone had a great time and the workshop was a huge success. It has been a great 3 years as Cadettes, but now they plan to bridge to Senior Girl Scouts and "GO FOR THE GOLD!"

Share a Smile with Daisy Troop 1038

Cathy Myers and Kelly Kitchell, Leaders

The theme for one of our Daisy Girl Scout meetings was "sharing" and "giving" (Making the World a Better Place). We read the story of the Rainbow Fish, which is a fabulous story about how sharing the beautiful things within ourselves is an uplifting experience and can quite literally change the world around us. Our girls then had the opportunity to share in this experience by sharing a smile. Through a nonprofit organization called "Color A Smile," our girls colored beautiful and inspirational smiles provided to us from the Web site www.colorasmile.org. We were then able to submit our colorings through the mail to be distributed to hospitals and sick or homebound people around the country. After all, who can resist smiling when receiving a personalized coloring masterpiece from a child? The girls had fun and we think really got the message that sharing from within our own hearts can spread joy around the world.

Everyone Loves Animals

Marci Finley, Leader

Especially Junior Troop 2161!!! We love animals of every kind and have incorporated that theme throughout the years. We earned the Pet Care badge and visited a veterinarian's office. For the past three years we have gone horseback riding and participated in the Horse Lovers Badge put on by the association. We also had a wonderful tour of the Walnut Creek Animal Rescue Foundation. The docents taught the girls how to protect themselves when encountering an aggressive dog. We also socialized with the cats. We will be spending the night at the Oakland Zoo in April. The zoo's education department has a wide arrangement of programs for kids.

Janet Angell, Leader

Cadette Troop 255 went to the Montecito Animal Clinic in Pacheco. While we were there, we talked to Dr. March. She told us about the veterinarian's office and animal care. Some other things she talked about were her career, and what was good/not good for your pets. Dr. March was a great help to us; she taught us what it takes to be a vet and she told us all about cats and dogs. Thank you, Dr. March!

Chabot Space & Science Center Sleepover B.E.A.T. Event

Written by, Kirsten Clausen - member of Troop # 2185

I went to the Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area Council Chabot Space & Science Center Sleepover for Cadettes & Seniors. During this event we earned the Space Exploration IPP (IPA). The event was great! There was never a dull moment! If there is another event next year, I highly recommend that you go!

Here is a sample of what we did:

  • Saw The Sky Tonight presentation at the Ask Jeeves Planetarium .
  • Had a mini lesson about space craft history. Watched The Living Sea in the Tien MegaDome Theater with a 70-foot dome-screen!
  • Viewed Saturn through Rachel, a telescope with a 20" lens, impressive!
  • Viewed Jupiter through Leah, a telescope with an 8" lens.
  • Participated in a simulated space shuttle mission named Voyage to Mars in the Challenger Learning Center.

Chabot's telescopes are open for free public viewing Friday and Saturday evenings, weather permitting. For more information, visit the Chabot Space & Science Center website: http://www.chabotspace.org.

    Mrs. Grossman's Sticker Factory Tour

Lambda Clausen, Leader - Brownie Troop 155I

I recommend taking a tour of Mrs. Grossman's Sticker Factory (1-800-429-4549)! You can visit her Web site at www.mrsgrossmans.com. Tour hours are Monday through Friday, at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. (reservations are required). A few days after I made the tour appointment, I received a tour confirmation package in the mail.

WOW was I surprised when I opened the package and found a large assortment of Mrs. Grossman's stickers for our troop! It was very exciting watching the girls' reactions when I showed them the pile of stickers. Another surprising thing was what we learned about the factory before we even got there! The employees are encouraged to bring their well behaved dogs to work! The first thing we did upon arriving at the factory was to watch a videotape about the company. Pay attention to the video; at the end there is a quiz! The people that know the correct answers get stickers! On the tour we saw all the things you would expect to see at a sticker factory, big machines and lots of stickers! Well, there was one unusual thing a about their emergency supplies... emergency dog food! At the end of the tour you get a bag of stickers and the opportunity to purchase more stickers (but no discount).

    You're in the Navy Now!

Written by the members of Troop 1662
    Tammy Jacobson, Leader

The Junior Overnight Aboard the USS Hornet proved to be a grand adventure for Troop 1662 when we spent the night on the aircraft carrier docked in Alameda in February. From finding your way through the maze of halls and stairs to enjoying breathtaking views of San Francisco on the flight deck, it was a challenging and unique experience. During the Live Aboard experience we ate in the mess hall, slept in bunks three tall and four wide and toured everything from the Radar Room to the Hurricane Deck. Some of our highlights and tips for future visitors are:

    "The ship is REALLY big!"
"The scary stories they tell really freaked us out - they're scary!"
"The Flight Deck is really cool."
"The food was good - especially the mashed potatoes."
"Go on Volcano when you ride the simulator - it's the wildest."
    "Beware of the weird smell."
"Don't be scared when they say you can hear a pin drop - they will make a loud noise."
    "Watch out for those bulkheads."
"The Apollo exhibit is out of this world!"
